Looking for something different in a timepiece? Clockx is something out of the box. A free Windows download, it puts a stylish clock on your desktop and a control icon in your taskbar. Right-click the icon or the clock to change the clock's display and behaviour.

If the standard clock doesn't appeal, click the Appearance tab and take your pick from hundreds of alternatives, ranging from a traditional grandfather clock or pocket watch to far more other-worldly designs.

You can set your chronometer to stay on top of other programs, hide away or lurk in semi-transparency. If you enable the Zoom feature, you can miniaturise your timepiece and tuck it away in a corner or position so it fits in the title bar of a maximised window.

Clockx provides a calendar and alarms as well as a basic clock.
